Home' Australian Govlink : Issue 1 2015 Contents According to Safework Australia’s Injuries Report,
from 2009 to 2013 falls from heights contributed
to 12% of all worker fatalities. This alarming
statistic is a cruel reality of how important it is
to properly protect your workers when they are
working at heights and is an unfortunate example
of how often this is neglected.
Roof access and fall arrest systems are frequently
a forgotten product and regarded as ”out of sight,
out of mind”. It is not until a major incident occurs
that they are audited, upgraded or installed.
What can you do to ensure your workers are safe?
Conduct an audit. This should be done
immediately to ensure that any risks are
identified and control measures are put in
place to mitigate the risk. Existing roof access
and fall arrest products need to be compliant
and conform to industry standards. Keeping
up to date with Australian Standards is of
utmost priority. A recent industry update, which
occurred in 2013, has seen a dramatic change
to Australian Standard AS5532 in the testing
requirements for manufacturers of anchors.
After rigorous testing we are pleased to advise
that Sayfa’s products meet the requirements of
Train your staff. Are all personnel
satisfactorily trained to carry out work at
heights? It is your responsibility that any
persons (including sub contractors) conducting
work at heights know how to correctly use the
equipment provided. It is a fact; insufficient
training and inexperience can cost lives.
Install systems that are easy to use. Are
your systems user friendly? It’s all very well to
install roof access and fall arrest equipment on
your buildings but the systems must effectively
control the risk and be easy to use with clear,
concise instructions and manuals available. On
system handover, Sayfa roof access and fall
arrest equipment includes comprehensive user
manuals to assist workers and sub contractors
in their correct use and maintenance.
Keep your systems in good working
order. Your systems need to be regularly
inspected by a qualified height safety inspector.
FROM 2009 TO 2013, 132 WORKERS HAVE
DIED AS A RESULT OF FALLS FROM HEIGHTS.
Don’t make your workplace a falls from heights statistic!
They need to include signage and tags which
are maintained, stating installation date, due
date of next inspection and limitations of the
system. You should also be aware that in the
event of a fall arrest device being activated, it
must be taken out of service until recertification
has been conducted by a qualified person.
You cannot afford to think that once you have
a system installed you have met your legal
obligation. Wear and tear, environmental
factors and industry standard updates can
all affect the ability of your system to meet
industry requirements. Systems that have been
dormant on the roof without being inspected
as per the manufacturer’s recommendations
run the risk of not performing as required in
the event of a fall. You cannot risk your system
failing when it is needed most.
Make sure the systems are installed and
maintained by competent personnel.
These systems are saving lives so it is extremely
important that the installation and design
complies to all regulatory guidelines, codes and
Australian Standards. Sayfa systems are installed
and designed by Sayfa Accredited Installers.
They are trained in the correct installation and
maintenance of these systems. Sayfa also offer
continual support and assistance to keep our
installers up to date with current standards and
regulations, as well as any changes to products
or installation requirements.
Safety is of prime importance in the workplace.
Even if you do not consider working at height
to be a frequent occurrence, failing to ensure
that you have a compliant roof access and fall
arrest system in place is considered negligent.
Nothing can replace a life lost.
At Sayfa we pride ourselves on being able
to assist you in providing your workers with
compliant and user friendly roof access and fall
arrest equipment. We ARE the market leaders
