Arkhefield is an architecture and interior
design practice based in Brisbane with a focus
on delivering projects across regional and
Over 20+ years, our practice has grown
organically through a collaborative and
integrated approach to designing and
delivering the built environment. We work
collectively with our clients and contractors
to share the opportunity and responsibility
in creating quality design and delivering
successful outcomes with every project.
Environmentally Sustainable Design
We strive for sustainability in every aspect
of our work—delivering projects that are
sustainable economically, socially and
culturally, as well as environmentally.
As a Queensland based firm, we recognise
our climate is central to the way we live
and key to the creation of our natural and
built surroundings. We pride ourselves on
our collaborative design approach in finding
innovative and effective design solutions
that seamlessly integrate environmentally
sustainable principles. As such, the practice
of environmental sustainability is intrinsically
linked to the design process and therefore
fundamental to our design solutions.
We believe that each project has an individual
relationship with its surroundings, and
by sustaining these relationships, we can
successfully create enduring architecture that
contributes positively to the public realm
and greater community. We prioritise the
site, embrace its constraints and optimise the
opportunities to deliver innovative solutions.
We aim to create value over the life of the
project through an integrated and holistic
approach to design, delivery and operation.
Every project has an individual relationship
with its environment, surroundings, community
and culture. By supporting and embracing these
relationships, we create enduring architecture
that makes a positive contribution to the world
that sustains it. Buildings that are economical
and efficient to create, operate and maintain.
Buildings that support the people who use
them and the places they occupy.
We strive to raise the bar on Environmentally
Sustainable Design principles and actively
promote these to our clients through the
design process. For this reason we are current
members of the Green Building Council
Australia and have Green Star Accredited
professionals within our team that review
and advise on ESD principles. We continue
to advance our knowledge of current
Environmentally Sustainable Design issues and
principles through further education.
We pursue environmental principles of passive
and active design for a holistic approach to
the complex process of building procurement.
To enable this we engage in the reuse and
recycling of materials and buildings while
exploring efficient building practices, systems
and services with our consultant partners.
Our recent commercial buildings 420 Flinders
Street in Townsville and Circa CT1 in Nundah—
both achieve a five star Green Star rating.
In designing this commercial tower in the city
heart of Townsville, Arkhefield has delivered
a highly energy efficient, cost effective
development, and a striking addition to the
North Queensland capital’s urban landscape.
The tower was designed to be completely
occupied by Ergon Energy, with the ground
level accommodating the Ergon Energy lobby
and a mix of retail and hospitality outlets.
The double height entry and foyer contribute
to the public streetscape, while defining the
building entrance. The orientation optimises
views of both the city surrounds and Magnetic
Island. As the building fills the entire corner site,
considerable emphasis was placed on defining
the development within the surrounding built
environment, while extending and enhancing the
urban landscape at ground level.
The building façade is dominated by sequences
of vertical blades—providing shade, optimising
energy efficiency, and creating a strong
impression for the prominent address. The
building promotes the use of energy efficient
transport and boasts generous end of trip
facilities for cyclists.
420 Flinders Street is a prime example of
Arkhefield’s integrated project delivery and
building information modelling (BIM). Leading
a collaborative and integrated approach to
project delivery, Arkhefield helped to optimise
the client budget and dramatically reduce
construction time, while maintaining the
highest standards of quality and integrity.
The BIM process allowed for efficient use of
prefabricated elements ensuring waste of
materials was minimized on site.
420 Flinders Street proves that great design
and ESD outcomes are achievable within a
modest budget and short programme.
